What I recall as my first real memory, the beginning of my consciousness, is the memory of looking at my face, outstretching my small hands, and touching my cheeks. I was not sitting in front of a mirror; I was sitting across from my twin brother on the stained carpet floor of our room. I was looking at him, and he was looking at me; but in our minds, I was looking at myself, and he, at himself. In the way that an infant cannot differentiate its mother and itself as separate beings, my brother and I perceived ourselves as one entity with two identical faces. Essentially, that is exactly what we were.
